STTARS Gallery – Saad

Saad TLAA is an Iraqi national who arrived on our shores in search of a safe and peaceful life for his family. As a teenager Saad Tlaa was a dissident. As a result he was imprisoned in Iraq. After being released, his family encouraged him to leave Iraq and move to Kuwait. Saad was imprisoned for up to five months by the Kuwaiti government which at that time sought to appease Iraq. Eventually, he found his way to Australia in 2009. He was detained and placed in Villawood Detention Centre and was released in November 2010. Saad’s story is one of courage, honesty and compassion.

These images explore Saad’s journey of resilience, and the practices, places, and people who enabled him to continue to find hope and strength despite having suffered war related torture and trauma.
